On 7th March 2021 The Science Museum Group in London along with the collaboration of National Railway Museum Shildon exercised executive power and not popular support and forcibly removed Locomotion Number One, Stephenson’s iconic locomotive, from its home in Darlington, north east England, where it had lived for almost 165 years and had become a part of the town’s heritage, history and culture. This was against the wishes of virtually the entire population of the 100,000 strong town and the 7,340 petitioners from around the country and the world who had signed a petition to stop this from happening (in the middle of one of the worst epidemics the world has seen for a century). Locomotion Number One, Darlington and railways are welded together in the consciousness of the entire world. The decision to relocate it to nearby Shildon is an insensitive act which flies in the face of history and tradition and has upset the harmony that once existed throughout the length of the world-famous Stockton and Darlington Railway. The aim of this fundraiser is to set up a campaign fund to recruit protestors and raise awareness and harness support and publicity in an endeavour to have Locomotion Number One returned before the 200th anniversary in September 2025, to Darlington, the true birthplace of the railways and it’s rightful home once and for all time.
