THE SOCIAL MODEL OF DISABILITY: REMOVING BARRIERS AND CHALLENGING OUTDATED ATTITUDES

Historically, society has seen disabled people as broken and in need of fixing.

But nearly fifty years ago, disabled activists devised a new way of understanding disability. The social model recognises that society disables people who have impairments or conditions. Applying it enables us to identify barriers and remove and reduce them.

Disabled trade unionist Janine Booth explains the social model and leads a discussion on how we can use it in our battles for accessible schools and disabled workers’ rights.
