SUMMARY:All the Rage: organising at work
DESCRIPTION:Janine will run a workshop on organising at work at All the Rage\, an annual socialist feminist one-day event. \nAll the Rage agenda\n  \n11:00am – 12:15pm All the Rage Plenary: Feminism and the Rise of the Far Right \nSpeakers: Sian Norris\, author of ‘Bodies under Siege’; Kavita Krishnan\, author of ‘Fearless Freedom’ \nFrom the US to India\, Brazil to Poland\, and here in the UK as well\, the ‘culture war’ is shifting politics to the right across the world. The main targets of the ‘new far right’ are migrants\, trans people and women. \nJoin our plenary session to hear about the religious right networks funding anti-abortion\, anti-trans projects and to discuss how we fight back and build a politics of solidarity in their place. \n  \n12:15pm – 1:15pm Lunch \nCheap vegetarian and vegan food available and kids’ picnic. \n  \n1:15pm – 5:00pm All the Rage Practical sessions suitable for children and adults \nAlongside talks and workshops\, we will be organising some informal practical sessions – banner and placard making\, lego building and zine creation. \nThese sessions aim to bring variety and accessibility to the event and will be open to adults and children. \nIf you don’t want to join talks and workshop-based sessions for the whole event\, if you have kids with you and want to muck in with them\, if you find discussing ideas while using your hands useful\, you can fully participate here. \nPeople with kids often find it difficult to attend political events – and women are often marginalised from politics because of this. There are many examples of women organising to counter this in the socialist movement\, we want to build on those. \nThere will be a staffed creche at the event in addition to these practical\, child-friendly sessions. Please make sure you let us know in advance if you are bringing children by writing to: office@workersliberty.org. \n  \n1:15pm – 2:25pm All the Rage Workshop: Organising for Trans Liberation \nThe past decade has seen a ramping up of transphobic rhetoric and policy. This has come from both the right and the left. \nIn government\, Labour has continued both the blanket ban on puberty blockers and hostile education guidance calling on schools to out trans and gender-questioning students to their parents. \nThis workshop will discuss these issues and consider the way forward to comprehensive trans healthcare and inclusive education\, with a focus on the fight we need to wage in the labour movement. \n  \n1:15pm- 2:25pm All the Rage Workshop: Taking Control of Our Work \nJanine Booth runs a participatory workshop looking at issues facing women workers and how we can organise to make work better\, against employers and against sexism. \nWe will consider what to do in various scenarios\, and participants can add their own. \n  \n2:45pm – 3:45pm All the Rage Plenary: Building Solidarity Not Borders. Defend Migrants’ Rights! \nEwa Pospieszynska\, Labour Campaign for Free Movement; Zimbabwe Women \nThe hostile environment is flourishing under the Labour government. The Rwanda scheme was scrapped\, but raids have stepped up\, detention goes on\, and basic rights to work\, decent housing\, healthcare and to family life\, all continue to be denied. \nMeanwhile\, migrant workers are organising\, and anti-raids campaigns are growing. Women are at the forefront of this work. \nThis session will discuss these issues and plan practical solidarity. \n  \n3:45pm – 4:15pm Break \n  \n4:15pm – 5:25pm All the Rage Workshop: The War on Woke \nProfessor Cath Fletcher \nWhat is the ‘war on woke’ and how should feminists respond to it? This interactive workshop is a chance to discuss the latest developments in an ongoing ‘culture war’ that has seen attacks internationally ranging from closures of gender studies programmes to bans on teaching critical race theory. \nWe’ll look at a range of scenarios drawn from real life to explore different campaigning options\, and consider where the right to free speech fits into this debate. \n  \n4:15pm – 5:25pm All the Rage Workshop: The Fight for Freedom in the Middle East \nIn Iran\, 45 years of theocratic government have oppressed women and driven the left underground. In Israel\, the far right runs the government. In Gaza\, a genocide is underway. \nMany of the forces touted as “resistance movements” on the western left – Hezbollah and Hamas – are themselves right-wing religious groups. \nBut across the middle east\, there are movements aiming to build an alternative to the politics of racism\, ethnic segregation and the religious right. Feminists are at the heart of this. \nIn this session\, we will hear from Palestinian\, Iranian and Israeli speakers directly involved in events\, and discuss the struggle for freedom across the region. We will hear from: \n\nAzadeh Neman\, Iranian feminism and trade unionist\nElla Keidar\, 17-year old Israeli military refuser\nRula Daood\, Palestinian National Co-Director of Standing Together\n\n  \n5:25pm – 6:00pm All the Rage Plenary: Labour in Power – What Next for Class Struggle Feminism? \nThe new government is already proving an unreliable ally of progressives – let alone socialists or socialist feminists. \nKeir Starmer has ruthlessly attacked the left\, and gone to great lengths to cut himself off from accountability including from the wider labour movement. On migration\, trans rights\, austerity and many other touchstone issues\, Starmer shows little sign of breaking with the policy of the outgoing Tory administration. \nBut the election of a Labour government also presents opportunities that we cannot afford to miss. Most major unions are affiliated to the governing party\, and can – if they are moved to by their members – have an impact. So what should we demand\, and how can we win? \n\nFor All the Rage information and tickets\, click here. \n \n

SUMMARY:Left Cultures 3: Birmingham launch
DESCRIPTION:Janine will contribute a reading to the Birmingham launch of Left Cultures 3. \n\nLeft Cultures: a word from our host\nWe are thrilled to host the Birmingham launch of the third edition of LEFT CULTURES magazine with editors PHIL WRIGGLESWORTH & COLUM LEITH joining a selection of contributors for a night of left-inspired chat & readings. \nThe evening will be hosted by Voce Books co-owner & contributor to the third edition\, Clive Judd. \nLEFT CULTURES is a contemporary space to champion all kinds of voices on the Left\, whether that be Socialist\, Communist\, Anarchist or anything in between. The Left has always been fizzing with ideas to change society & Left Cultures celebrates the Left’s cultural past\, discussing gems of storytelling within film\, literature\, music\, art & poetry. It does this by asking culture creators practicing today who are willing to stand up & fight for their beliefs to tell a personal story of how culture from the past has influenced & inspired them. All the points of reference from both past & present come together to make a wonderfully rich\, diverse & beautifully illustrated lexicon of Left Culture. As Tony Benn said ‘there is no final victory\, as there is no final defeat. There is just the same battle. To be fought\, over & over again. So\, toughen up\, bloody toughen up’. \nThis is one of our FUTURES events\, dedicated to non-fiction books that help us to rewire our consciousness & zero in on the ideas that help shape the architecture of our collective futures. \nTICKETS: Free \nPlease reserve your ticket here on our Eventbrite page. \nVOCE BOOKS is located at 54-57 Allison Street\, Digbeth with step-free access via the Warehouse Café. For further enquiries about the event\, or to discuss any access requirements please email info@vocebooks.com \n  \n\nThis event follows the launch of Left Cultures 3 in Bristol in July.

SUMMARY:Poeting at Glastonwick 2024
DESCRIPTION:Janine will be pumping out the poetry on the first night of the 2024 Glastonwick Festival\, returning two years after her last tour de force at the Sussex shindig. \nHeld at Coombes Farm\, Coombes Road\, Lancing BN15 0RS\, Glastonwick is the music and poetry festival with good beer (and cider)\, and the beer (and cider) festival with good music and poetry. \nCoombes Farm is just off the A27 between Brighton and Worthing. The festival provides a free shuttle bus from Brighton and local villages. The timetable is available on the event website. \nThere is a campsite. Children are welcome. No dogs\, as the venue is a working farm. \nA word from organiser Attlia the Stockbroker … \n\n\nGlastonwick: New Barn\nAs with last year\, the festival will be held in a different barn to the original (the one at the back\, beyond the cider/food one) following farmers Jenny and Jerry’s decision to turn the main barn into a storage area. There are more details about this on the Glastonwick Facebook group page. Other than some dust issues\, it proved to be a fine substitute\, and with better airflow it kept the beer in good nick. \n\n\n\nGlastonwick: The Artists\nLast June we had 11 first time performers and\, I am happy to say\, more women on stage than ever before\, approaching parity in terms of individual acts: this is something I had been working towards for years. \n\n\n\n\nGlastonwick: The Beers\nThere will be over 50 cask-conditioned beers from small independent breweries\, including exclusive festival specials. There will be over 20 local cider and perry\, good food with vegetarian options and\, of course\, the legendary convivial Glastonwick atmosphere. \n\nMore details and tickets here. \n \nOther artists appearing at Glastonwick over the weekend include: \n\nEast Town Pirates – Ipswich’s finest buccaneers\nTV Smith – Adverts\, then everything\nDakka Skanks -Incredible ska\nThe Antipoet\nFractured – Angular and melodic\nMerry Hell -Majestic melodious multitude from Wigan\nNewtown Neurotics\nMenstrual Cramps\nRory Mcleod – Rhythmic storyteller (& more)\nMuddy Summers and the DFWs – Melody and fire\nGarden Gang – Bubblegum glam punk watering can from Munich\nAnti Social Worker -Grime Poet\nJess Silk – Radical songwriter genius\nShotgun Marmalade – Black Country Clash\nSteve Tasane – Angry compassionate wordsmith\nNasty Fishmonger – Dance frenzy folk punk\nJohn Otway – Everpresent lunatic\nBrian Bilston & Henry Normal – Some Poetry\, perhaps?\nDaffadildoes – Punk riot\nShoreham Chamber Choir – Early music\n\nAlex Hall tells the history of Glastonwick … \nBack in 1996\, I co-founded Glastonwick with Attila and the late Roy Chuter\, who ran Attila’s postal mailing list at that ancient time before email was common\, and way before Facebook and Twitter were conceived. \nThe concept was Attila’s idea\, pairing the very best musical and poetic talent with the very best real ales in the same venue\, which then was Southwick Community Centre and the adjoining Barn Theatre (hence the ‘wick’ suffix in the name). He needed an experienced beer coordinator and cellar person to make it work\, I jumped at the chance as I was keeping the cellar at Brighton’s Evening Star – which had the fledgling Dark Star Brewery down there at the time. Roy was the original staffing coordinator. \nIt was conceived as a revolutionary idea in the rather staid 1990s\, back then many beer festivals had a token covers band stuffed into a corner to be ignored – and pretty much all music festivals that Attila played at had global corporate sponsors where the only stuff to drink was bland\, gaseous\, overpriced\, mass-produced keg lager and cider swill that none of us would even remotely consider torturing our palates with. We jointly wanted to provide an antidote to all that. And we did …
